Yes or No: Wal-Mart in Tupper Lake 274 comments

Jarden Plastic Solutions plant (formerly Oval Wood Dish), Tupper Lake, 2008Jarden Plastic Solutions plant (formerly Oval Wood Dish), Tupper Lake, 2008

A Wal-Mart — in Tupper Lake, New York? Recent news reports indicate that Tupper Lake’s Mayor has been in contact with the retail chain Wal-Mart asking them to consider locating in the Village of Tupper Lake. This invitation follows the May 2008 closing of Jarden Plastic Solutions’ 15-acre plant that employed 70 people (formerly the home of Oval Wood Dish).

Nigro Companies, a Colonie based developer specializing in shopping centers, has been interested in the property for some time. If Nigro Companies does purchase the plant, Wal-Mart may move in.

There is already a Wal-Mart Superstore is in Ticonderoga, N.Y., inside the Blue Line. Wal-Mart has attempted and failed to locate in the northern part of the Adirondack Park twice. Public opposition kept the large chain out of Lake Placid, N.Y. in 1994 and Saranac Lake, N.Y. in 2006.

Advocates believe a large discount store could serve customers from as far as 40 miles away. Residents of some Adirondack communities currently drive over an hour to places like Plattsburgh, Queensbury and Malone, N.Y. to shop for groceries and other necessities.

Construction and operation of a large store could create new jobs for area residents. Wal-Mart is the largest private employer in the United States, employing roughly 1.4 million people.

Opponents argue that Wal-Mart, or any big-box store, has no place in the Adirondack Park. They are concerned that a large retail store will hurt small main street businesses. In addition, some contend that Wal-Mart fails to provide substantial wages and health care benefits to employees. Many simply see these huge stores as unsightly.

Do you think Wal-Mart should be allowed in Tupper Lake?

No, the beauty of the Adirondack Park are the small family run stores and industries that do not mare the landscape.

I do not think you should because it will
1 make the adirondacks not as pretty
2 get less bears and wildlife creatures
3 it will put out alot of small stores out of business
4 it will ruin the adirondacks

Comment by Bill Chattanooga Jul 31, 2008

1- one store will make the park ugly?
2- less bears, because of one walmart?
(have you been to Tupper Lake?)
3- a lot of small business? ( again have you been to Tupper Lake)
4- ruin the Adirondacks? GET A LIFE PEOPLE ITS ONLY A STORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No because it would hurt local buisnesses, and it just doesn’t look right.

Comment by Peter Lutz Central Valley, NY Jul 9, 2008

NO, a Walmart in this area would be a detriment to the struggling store and shop owners. It is difficult enough for these merchants to stay in business, why bring in a multi billion dollar corporation?

Comment by Colleen Van Hoven Essex, New York Jul 9, 2008

We have to drive 37 miles to Plattsburgh for major shopping and we are glad to do it to keep our hamlet the way it is.

I say “no” to a Wal-Mart in Tupper Lake!!!!!

I think that they should not build it because they can use the land for a different use.

Comment by jimmy altvater pittsburgh, pa Jul 9, 2008

I dont think that a wal-mart is necessary. The store has its advantages. Wow saving you a few dollars. The store draws other stores into the area which is a plus to some people but to other family owned stores….. its another struggle to stay in business. No to wal-mart for one main reason. Once its built, the development monster has beed started and now won’t be able to be stopped. look at Heidelberg, Pa. once was a small race track for the local piston heads and is now a huge shopping center……. Goodluck. :-/

I spend my summer vacations in the Adirondacks each year. I would regret the arrival of a “big box” like Walmart. Sprawl is always a bad influence on a community, but it is unthinkable in the Adirondacks. I can’t imagine how much the park would be changed if this awful precedent were allowed.

Comment by Thomas Withiam Trumansburg, NY Jul 9, 2008

I think it wouldn’t be so good for a big box store to end up in the Adirondacks. I always consider the Adirondacks to be a place for wilderness rather than development.

What local business. if you live in tupper it would great not to travil 90 miles with gas over $40

Comment by Erin Schenosky Blue Mountain Lake Jul 10, 2008

No, Walmart is the root of all evil. First it’s a Walmart, then a McDonalds, then a mini mall, then a super mall. It is just the first in a step of bringing the pollution and corruption of a busy city to the Adirondacks. The Adirondacks is known for it’s natural feel, it’s connections to it’s roots, and it’s unique and interesting towns, museums, and shops. Bringing in this commercialized scum would only ruin it. No.

Comment by Anonymous TL Jul 11, 2008

There actually is a McDonald’s and several “mini-malls” currently in Tupper Lake. I would be in support of a Wal-Mart, or a Target, if it meant not having to drive to Plattsburgh or Malone for major shopping. As wonderful as it is to be a life-long resident of the Adirondacks, it can be rather inconvenient at times. A store in town with more options could be wonderful addition.

Comment by Sue Schenosky n syracuse, ny Jul 10, 2008

no to walmart. they suck the life out of mom & pop shops and then you are trapped into getting only what they offer. mom & pop shops are the heart and soul of the adirondacks and it needs to be left as is. for once in our life, lets let history stay as it is instead of always trying to suburbanize everything. let the wilderness stay as wilderness!!

Comment by Don Boink Rt. 28 Warensburg Jul 11, 2008

It is up to the locals to decide what they want for their comminity. Not everyone cares for Wal Mart but then again folks need jobs. Whether it will hurt other businesses is a hard question to answer. But it should be the locals who decie the issue.

NO WAY.

Comment by Miriam Ganze Rochester, NY Jul 11, 2008

I think the decision has to be made by the year round residents of the park. I don’t think it is fair if summer people impose their wish for a wilderness experience on people who live and work here all year round. For me, I dislike Walmart in any community, but the days of the single, family stores seem to be unrecoverable and we have to be realisitic.

Comment by Nancy Montesano Indian Lake, NY Jul 11, 2008

I don’t know. Having grown up in the Adirondacks I know how hard and expensive it is to try to get somewhere to buy the things you need. However, the idea of a Wal-Mart in the Adirondacks is pretty hard to swallow. I wish that there were more jobs of different types to allow more people to work in the area. Especially in the medical fields since to the best of my knowledge Hamilton County still doesn’t have a DOCTOR! Maybe that is the area we should be working toward and jobs would come from that. Any way you look at it the young people need to have jobs to stay here. Otherwise soon we will be a community of only old people and weekend residents.

Walmart does not belong in an area such as Tupper Lake. Let’s keep this area untouched by such a store.

Comment by Maria Kroth Delmar, New York Jul 12, 2008

Please keep big box stores, especially Wal-Mart out of the park. The park is supposed to be a place of a simpler time, so don’t ruin it with so called “progess” of having big box stores.

Comment by courtney alden, NY Jul 12, 2008

first of all, there is not enough people to support a wal-mart. second of all, if you did build a wal-mart: how many of the people would actually shop there; most people would try to boycot it because the company is disrupting the whole “nature” theme.
I say no.

Comment by Here for a while Tupper Lake, Ny Aug 6, 2008

People may say they will boycott it but they wouldnt there have been several studies to prove this theory. THey may try to go at night so there neighbors dont see them but they will be shopping there….Besides at some of the outrageous prices on items at “local” markets give me a break think about the economy that would be enhanced by this

Local businesses are a fragile group and cannot withstand the overwhelming competition of a giant like Wal-Mart

Comment by Nelsie Aybar-Grau Kingston, NY Jul 13, 2008

Comment by Soren Peterson Lake Placid Jul 14, 2008

We need to keep the Adirondacks as clean as possible. Putting a Wal-Mart there will not help.

Comment by Cambria Peterson Lake Placid Jul 14, 2008

Don’t put a Wal-Mart in Tupper Lake because it would take up a lot of space from the animals.

Comment by Rick Peterson Lake Placid Jul 14, 2008

Please don’t build a Wal-Mart in Tupper Lake because it would not be consistent with the Adirondack Park environment. It would be like putting a Home Depot in Yellowstone - it simply doesn’t belong.

Comment by Tom Mallow Horseheads NY Jul 15, 2008

There was the same opposition to Wal-Mart in Watkins Glen NY, Schuyler County because of the stores location on the south end of Seneca Lake. The project was finally approved a few years ago and the store was built. The store has improved business traffic in area mom and pop businesses and stores not closed them. It is also very helpful to the thousands of seasonal residents and tourists who shop in Watkins Glen instead of going to Elmira, Corning and Ithaca when they stay at their cottages. Year round residents find the store helpful in the winter season because they don’t have to travel the icy roads in winter and save money on gas. Schuyler is one of the poorest counties in New York State so any savings are helpful to residents. Go for it Tupper Lake.

Comment by Eddie Richmond, VA Jul 15, 2008

Yes, but only if the Wal-Mart doesn’t look like every other Wal-Mart. If the designers of the ‘big box store’ were to design it so that it does not take up as much land and look as awful as most Wal-Marts, it might work. For some, especially now that gas is so expensive, driving the hour to Wal-Mart is too much. Having one close to the center of the Adirondacks could be quite advantageous.

Comment by Penny Byrd Hertford, NC Jul 15, 2008

Not a NECESSARY business, hardly even a luxury. Keep the Adirondacks as free of commercialism as possible and continue to espouse small businesses instead.

Yes Walmart! We need commerce and people need JOBS! especially my husband who was laid off work after over 18 YEARS of service to Jarden Plastics, formerly OWD.

Comment by Pat McCord Glenmont,NY Jul 16, 2008

Absolutely not!!!

We have a Wal-Mart in our area and it has brought nothing but negative results. The area is not maintained and has become a real eyesore. Our local police have to respond to calls there almost daily. The argument that Wal-Mart brings jobs is not valid. The jobs they create are very low paying and the employees get exploited. Bringing in WalMart is bad enough, but letting Nigro get a foothold in the area is a fatal mistake. He paves everything in site and has no concern for the envrionment, history, etc. (example, tearing down a 200 year old building that locals wanted saved and moved so he could put in a Target store in East Greenbush.) Stick to your guns - keep them both out. The Adirondacks are far too valuable to all of us.

Comment by halle raquette lake Jul 16, 2008

don’t build a wal mart. they are corrupt. they use cheap labor in asia and give them no money to work with. this also contributes to the measly pay of their employees. they need to stop building them and letting them take over the world. just like in wall-e.

Comment by Anonymous May 23, 2009

Isn’t everything made in Asia nowadays? They have a McDonald’s that pays minimum wage. I think that they should have at least one store that they could get groceries without having to travel long distances.

Comment by Will Jankowski Town of Lake Pleasant Jul 16, 2008

Wal-Mart should never be allowed to open a store in Tupper Lake. Although it may seem ridiculous in today’s modern age, the whole point of the Adirondack Park is to provide a relaxing getaway from the hustle and bustle of the outside world. For all of the year-round inhabitants, Wal-Mart would take away from the local economy and charm. Little businesses thrive in towns like Tupper Lake, and having a gigantic superstore will only hurt their livelihood. For the sake of the wilderness and ambience of the Adirondacks, do not let Wal-Mart come.

I dont think so…just drive to the nearest city (Ticonderoga, N.Y for example)

Comment by Louise Munk Eagle Bay, N.y Jul 18, 2008

Yes, I feel the residents of the Adirondacks need a larger facility to buy food, house supplies and the like.

Comment by Dale Davis Albion, NY Jul 18, 2008

We have a Wal-Mart in our town and it is killing our downtown. They only want to build new. They are not interested in renovating older existing structures. As far as jobs are concerned they are relatively few in number and low paying in nature. Tell your mayor to think long and hard before he opens this Pandora’s box. I set on the town board that considered the Wal-Mart. You will lose your small town identity to this corpoate giant.

Comment by Puck Lohnas Summer resident/Long Lake Jul 18, 2008

As a landscape architect and planner, I believe current events are showing us that putting our eggs in the ‘one size fits all’ basket has many inherent risks. I think it is far more important to develop new industries that might be based on sustainable resources and new technologies than retail based jobs dependent on the vagaries of the global economy. Also, with higher gas prices it is going to be difficult for local people to afford to indulge in recreational shopping.
What Tupper needs is a good quality grocery store; if Wal-Mart had a model that was a smaller footprint I think it Might be okay. We have to be realistic about meeting the needs of local residents. I just hate to see job creation hung solely on the banner of Wal-Mart.

Comment by Nicole Bissonette saratoga springs Jul 18, 2008

I dislike Walmart, and don’t like to see them move into any community, but I also would not be able to drive 30+ miles to shop for neccessities. The community needs to decide for themselves. Tupper Lake is their home. The rest of us are just visitors.

Comment by Kurt Fischer Flemington, NJ Jul 18, 2008

Wal Mart has a unfriendly attitude to both host communities and employees. They are not model citizens for a new greener future. We will not patronize such stores and will lament the damage such a venture will do to the small businesses and warm community of Tupper Lake. Good luck in keeping this wart from your shorelines.

Comment by katrina veromont Jul 19, 2008

No, there shouldn’t be a wal-mart where ever they can put one. It is nice to know that there isn’t always a big store right near you. It makes you feel more alive.

Comment by Paul Willig Ballston Lake Jul 20, 2008

A well designed Wal- Mart would be more attractive than a palstics plant. It wouldprovide the needs of the area and would conserve fuel for many of the residents who would have to drive distances for there needs. More jobs in the area without traveling great distances wouldn’t hurt either.

Comment by The Newkirks Jul 20, 2008

Wal Mart tends to destroy competition and force suppliers to cut costs beyond responsible operation (in light of the environment and wages)

Avoid such a scenario.

Comment by Nick Bonacquist Schenecatdy Jul 20, 2008

It may be nice to have a wal-Mart to some people if they have never been to one or have and liked it but some people may desegree and not want to have one i think the town should vote on it.

Comment by Arianna Anderson Mcgraw,NY Jul 20, 2008

No I do not think that there should be a Wal-Mart in Tupper Lake because of all of the wildlife. If there is a Wal-Mart in Tupper Lake the wildlife populations will decrease and soon our children and their children will never see some of the wildlife that have become extinct. Also if there is a Wal-Mart on Tupper Lake, it will produce even more polution and then even more animal species will become extinct! NO WAL-MART ON TUPPER LAKE!

Comment by Kiernan Spigner Greenwich, NY Jul 20, 2008

Comment by Norine Thibault Skaneateles and Big Moose Lake, NY Jul 20, 2008

NO, I do not think there should be a Wal Mart in Tupper Lake. It will take away from the small business people. For those looking for employment, the town should be looking to recruit (replace) another industry, not a large retail store. This ( a large retail store) would be counter productive for all in the long run. It may afford some people jobs; only to cost others (the small retailers) their jobs, as well as change the character and integrity inside the blue line

Comment by Carolyn Dommreis New York, NY Jul 20, 2008

I’ve been visiting Tupper Lake with my family since I was a small child, and one of the things I always appreciated was how much Tupper Lake wasn’t infested with chain markets. If you want Starbucks, and name brand shopping, one can easily get to Lake Placid in a hop a skip and a jump.

I sincerly believe that placing a Wal-Mart in Tupper Lake would destroy the pure and natural integrity of the village.

Thank you for taking the people’s feelings on the matter into consideration, and I truly hope you will eventually chose not to allow a Wal-Mart to be placed in Tupper Lake.

Sincerly,
Carolyn Dommreis

although many people in this region travel a far distance to shop there is no need for a Wal-Mart in Tupper Lake. The store will take away from local businesses and has a large chance of failing as there two stores in this region have. The way I see it people who live her are more likely to travel to plattsburgh and Queensbury becuase it is “a city” and their doctors are there. Why would people travel to Tupper Lake to go to Wal-Mart when the biggest attraction there is MacDonalds. If Wal-Mart has been voted down in Lake Placid and Saranac Lake why would people want one in Tupper Lake a less busy and almost stagnant town? I am a summer resident in Blue Mountain Lake and I firmly believe that putting a Wal-Mart would have the same affect as putting one in Blue Mountain, pointless.

I’ve summered in the Adirondacks since a small child. I’ve always been thankful for the local businesses in the region… Most live and own right here - and thus return thier earnings back to the local economy. There is simply no end to the damage a large store like this does to the local people and in the end tourism - First local business will not be able to compete with a conglomerate that buys on the scale of a big box store. The small boutique owners that add so much charm and heritage will be squashed. But more importantly the dollars spent in store’s like these won’t stay in the community. The jobs created will be meager clerk cashier “mcjobs” - and the stores themselves are unsightly. Americans must return to Teddy Roosevelt’s courage in the face of the robber barons and monopolies of that time… We are being attacked by this swindol of “low low” prices — the long term consequences of poor economic conservation would be devistating. Americans must regain courage to see that long term planning and local small business support is the backbone of a strong US economy.

There is a current effort to build a cooperative type of store in Saranac Lake, which would supply unmet needs while not threatening local businesses or exploiting employees, for which Wal-Mart, unfortunately, has been known.

Comment by Chris Ortloff Plattsburgh Jul 25, 2008

Wal-Mart has come to symbolize what is “bad” about the “big bad outside” world, but to many, if not most year-round residents, quality products at affordable prices are an essential need, which Wal-Mart’s efficiencies of scale and purchasing power can offer. Although local merchants feel threatened by the competition, their customers by and large would rather have the prices and convenience and selection that the traditional small-town merchant simply has not offered them.

Comment by Lisa Z. Rodriguez future resident of Schroon Lake Jul 25, 2008

I will soon be moving to Schroon Lake to be a year-round resident and business owner. I have been spending summers in the Adirondack Park at Lake Chateaugay since 1974. I love the lifestyle of the Adirondacks, not filled with rushing from place to place as here in the suburbs of Northern Virginia. I am happy in the summers to make the once amonth trips to a larger town for shopping and errands. If you bring a monster store in, you will force local businesses who survive on vacationers and local sales to compete in a way they would not be able to afford to do and you will force them out of business. Once this store has a foothold in one location, residents will have a harder time legally not allowing them in other locations within the the blue line no matter what the super store says now. I like shopping at WalMart as much as the next person but what it will do to the local economy will be irreversible. Not to mention the look of the chains and superstores forcing themselves in on the pictureque main streets that those from urban areas come to the Adirondacks to leave behind. I hope you will include my comments even though I am not yet a resident, as this place is so dear to my heart.

Wal-Mart is a labor disaster whose slogan “live better” is an ironic echo of the Teamster slogan “live better, work union.” Wal-Mart is good for no one~not its own workers or the small stores it displaces. We must pause and rethink our desire for mounds of cheap clothes and cheap goods which we quickly discard so that we can go to Wal-Mart and acquire more of the same sometimes cruelly produced goods.

It is hard to say if a Walmart should locate here. The biggest problem is driving so far to get the things that you need. It is even harder for a single mom with children and one who is disable. I drive 45 minutes to get to a Walmart.

Comment by Pamela Jones Clayton Ny Jul 29, 2008

I think allowing a Wal-Mart to be built in this area would not only hurt small businesses it would cause many of them to close. When you invite WalMart’s and others like it, you lose the relationship of customer and owner. The store owners in my expierience do more than just provide goods for the community. In some cases they provide a few jobs, they support community activities like raffles, baseball teams. They take pride in their communites unlike a large chain would.

Wal-Mart will not harm small main street businesses. Springville, New York has grown so much since the Wal-Mart store opened there. There are new malls, filled to capacity there, the smaller shops on Main Street are thriving and even Tops built a brand new store right up the road from Wal-Mart, so people can’t blame Wal-Mart for putting the smaller businesses out of business. It is the people that don’t shop at the smaller businesses that put them out. If I lived in the area of Tupper Lake, and believe me, I would love to, I would welcome Wal-Mart. My family has camped in the Adirondacks for years and remember shopping at Ames. What a shock that was to see closed. Then when Tops bought out Grand Union. That was a disaster right from the beginning. Grand Union was a great store. Once we found out that Tops owned it, we took our business to the A&P. Unfortunately, A&P closed as well, then Tops up and left the area. Typical of that chain.
So, people of Tupper Lake, don’t fight Wal-Mart. It isn’t as bad as some folks believe.

The Adironcks are already too threatened by dramatic increased use in the last 50 years. A Wal-Mart will additionally encourage increased use by adding city convenience to visitors and tourists. -

To whom it may concern,
Why is it that a big multi-million dollar company is always trying to take over the quiet small towns? I live in a town in upstate New York close to Lake Ontario, Walmart is trying to pull the same deal. The locals are saying ” NO ” because of the bad elements it may bring in from the inner city and ruin the peaceful neighborhood. Same goes for Tupper Lake!!! I have been going up to the Adirondacks for the last 10 years to vacation during the summer and fall, and the one thing I love is the small unique stores that make up what is most beautiful about the Adirondacks. However, having a store like that would be beneficial for nearby locals that can’t afford the gas or the occasional family vacationing at a campground. If anything I strongly think Walmart should stay out of the Adironacks!! What about putting a WEGMANS in that plaza???

Comment by Katie O'Coin Rochester, NY Jul 31, 2008

How about putting a Wegmans in that neighborhood? It’s family owned and voted one of top 100 companies to work for!!!!

lARGE STORES DRIVE OUT SMALLER LOCAL SUPPLIERS WHICH YOU NEED FOR EVERY DAY SUPPLY. ESPECIALLY NOW AND IN THE FUTURE, DRIVING WILL BE CURTAILED BY GASOLINE COSTS AND LOCAL MERCHANTS ARE NECESSARY TO SUSTAIN A VILLAGE OR SMALL TOWN. THERE IS NO QUESTION THAT FOR LARGER PURCHASES PEOPLE WILL DRIVE FARTHER ANYWAY. WAGES ARE USUALLY SO LOW THAT YOU WILL HAVE IMMIGRANTS TAKING THESE JOBS, SOONER OR LATER. WE HAVE OBSERVED THIS IN WALMART AT QUEENSBURY. IT WOULD BE BETTER TO LOOK FOR SOME OTHER RETILER WHO PLAYS BY THE RULES FOR EMPLOYEES.

Comment by Sandy Saranac Lake Jul 31, 2008

Please reconsider your wish for a Wal-Mart in Tupper Lake. Don’t turn your beautiful Adirondack community and road along the lake into the standard suburban strip mall with the over-sized big box store and huge parking lot and loads of lights. Yes, you deserve decent retail stores and local jobs - but you don’t have to make your town like every other one that has a Wal-Mart. Avoid ending up with a huge empty store when they don’t make enough money and decide to close. People won’t want to vacation in Adirondack towns that look just like the suburbs they left behind. Be smart - look for alternatives. All of our small Adirondack towns face the same problem - but we don’t want to lose our unique identities. There has got to be another way to have jobs and stores without sacrificing our “character”.

Comment by Anonymous Long Lake, NY Jul 31, 2008

Wal-mart…what is it one would be trying to accomplish by opposition to a Big Box Store…you’ve talked about preservation and simplicity. Well simplistic can not be an approach to the Adirondack communities survival… we desperately need expansion and open-mindedness. Change needs to be embraced. Quite frankly, communities here are dying, statistics are flat lined and there desperately needs to be growth in our approach to the economic state of the Adirondacks for the people who live and work here…and so visitors can continue to have services when they visit. Any landscape needs money to support projects which improve and protect… granted there needs to be balance… but any opportunity the Adirondack residents have to save money or any work opportunity is a gain to our small economy…so those whose heart and soul is connected to the region can protect and direct, which takes their own sweat, passion and money to survive….Why not Walmart jobs? the current job choices here now are so minimal and they are not high paying with nice benefit packages. The days of a golden parachute from your work effort are gone by…and they didn’t exist in this retreat locale. To view the simpler time meander around the Museum exhibits and remember…that is history… Simpler is not the approach we need, on the contrary surviving here is quite complex.
To talk about the preservation of space for this project is misdirected the building location is unsightly at best and new construction would be an improvement without upset to current landscape or any one’s view. Any ingress and egress of traffic (people) would mean new exposure to current small businesses, gains would be made and should be welcomed…why limit any opportunity for community growth. Can’t you think positive? Residents, both year round and summer, gain convenience. I don’t see this as daunting as has been expressed.

You need a Wal-Mart like a bear needs a bicycle. You don’t need welfare-level wages, long hours of work and employees who can’t afford to purchase their health care benefits. You don’t need to do business with a corporate behemouth who dictates supply regulations to the suppliers who are trying to provide fair wages and benefits to their employees. Wal-Mart wants to own America and its doing a good job without Tupper Lake. Wal-Mart gets tax exemptions to build huge box stores. Mom and Pop shops get no tax subsidies, pay fair wages and supply benefits to workers.

In my case, I was providing a welfare eye exam to a Wal-Mart employee in my town. The Wal-Mart optometrist at the Wal-Mart in my town would not even provide welfare eye exams to a fellow employee. AND, what is really sad to me, is that the taxes that I and the rest of my employees were paying was going to take care of an employee of the largest corporation in the world. So, I not only took a reduced fee to provide the service to this employee, I was also PAYING, through my taxes, for the health care that I think this huge corporation should be paying for.

Were Wal-Mart buying American goods, made by American workers making a lving wage and receiving benefits, instead of buying junk from China, Viet Nam, Mexico and other countries who allow subsistent wages, then I would be a happy supporter of Wal-Mart. As it is, this corporation is a major pet peeve of mine and it felt good to be able to put this out.

Read “How Wal-Mart is Ruining America (and the rest of the world) and What you Can Do About It” and then YOU decide.

The Adirondacks are so beautiful and we don’t want to ruin the view by having another generic store here. It is not that I am against Wal Mart, because we shop at Walmart, but I am just worried that it will take away business from the mon and pop stores in the Adirondack and take away the uniqueness of the Adirondacks. It is a really hard decision because the people who live in the Adirondack have to travel for a long distance to go to Walmart and I am sure that it would be convenient for them to have a Wal Mart close by. It may also provide for more jobs. But I still think that they should not do it. Thanks for the opportunity to express my opinion.

I do NOT think a Walmart should be build in Tupper Lake (or anywhere else). If residents need places to buy groceries and other necessities, smaller, locally-owned stores should be established to provide jobs and supported by local residents and tourists. Local character, wages and benefits, and the quality of products available will be damaged by having a Walmart. Please do not let Wal-Mart into this community. I have witnessed the town of Houghton, Michigan have to deal with the vacant retail space that Wal-Mart has left behind once they decided to expand. Wal-Mart would be a great addition to the community. The store would not only offer goods at very low prices for people struggling during hard times, but would bring in people to shop in small shops that are unique and offer goods that cannot be bought at Wal-mart. With more people driving through the town, more opportunities are created for new small businesses, and to give the town a facelift. The store would also eliminate the eyesore that is currently a plastics factory.

Comment by Bernie Wilmington/Asheville Aug 4, 2008

No thank you. I suggest the Mayor of Tupper Lake do some homework. Once the facts of how Wal-Mart works are learned I think minds would change. Wal-Mart is an opportunistic business. Their object is profit, not employee interests, not community interests, not environmental interests. The Adirondacks of all places should be protected from this preditator. Remember, revenues from local businesses flow back into the community -revenues from Wal-Mart flow to Arkansas. Maybe it’s time for a change in local government?

Comment by Neil Rochester, NY. Aug 4, 2008

WalMart has an attitude that the lowest price is the only attribute to be considered and quality, service and product origin is immaterial… they hire employees and attract customers that also think that way. Pretty soon the unkept look of the inside of WalMart spreads to the outside and the lack of concern for their surroundings will spread as their like-minded employees and customers gather round. The Adirondack Park was established to preserve the natural surroundings and if WalMart is allowed in it is the beginning of the end for the Adirondacks.

I don’t think it belongs in the Adirondacks. Leave nature and the rustic area the way it is. To many companies come and ruin the rustic area and commercialize it. Leave the area rusic. I enjoy coming to this area just for the rustic looks and nature.

NO!

It would drive out small and unique businesses in the area which leads to the charm which draws visitors.

We visit here, I thnk Wal-mart would be bad for the area.

The Wal-Mart in Tupper Lake would bring more job opportunities to the area.

Comment by Douglas Smith Indian Lake Aug 4, 2008

No Wal-Mart in Tupper or anywhere else within the blue line….Keep the Adirondacks wild.

Comment by Carol Beaver Dams NY Aug 4, 2008

A Wal-Mart was built in Watkis Glen, near my home a few years back.

It has nearly destroyed or has destroyed many businesses that have been in our area for many years. They also do not pay taxes like they were supposed to. It was built in a swamp and much was lost.

It is an eyesore and yes there are jobs, most of the local employes of wal mart complain that they make low wages and cannot get health insurance.

Don’t let a walmart come to Tupper Lake, it is a mistake!!!

Comment by John Beaver Dams NY Aug 4, 2008

Dont allow this to happen to Tupper Lake, I have spent many years in the Adirondak Park and I also live in Upstate NY where a Wal-Mart has come in and destroyed the landscape, offered crummy jobs, avoided paying taxes as well as putting our small businesses out one by one.

Wal-Mart should never be allowed to taint this very very special area.

Dont allow this!!!! You will be so sorry.

Comment by Monica Hutchinson Highland, Arkansas Aug 4, 2008

I think they need one there.

If the Wal-Mart is to take the place of the plant, I see little problem with its presence. The major concern would be if it needed to be erected by scratch via major deforestation. I have some heart for small businesses, but the major concern is not helping out some blue collar guy. No, it’s about being provided what you need when you need it, and that’s what a Wal-Mart Supercenter does.

Comment by betsy and david dorman westbury new york Aug 5, 2008

No, Wal-Mart should not be allowed in Tupper Lake, NY. Their presence will destroy an already struggling lifestlye and economy. Looking at Vermont, which did allow the Box Store Home Depot, despite community opposition, to open, now is closed. Stay away, WalMart etc. .

NO WAY!!! Wal-Mart is the bane of our existence. Keep them out!!!

Comment by Marie Koretsky Clifton Park,NY Aug 5, 2008

Unfortunately due to tough economic times, there really is no YES or No. Lets go over both sides. If I said YES, that means there will be a major retail store invading a peaceful Adirondack village. It would probably bring in more revenue for the area. Leading to more jobs for local residents. However, putting a Walmart in the Village of Tupper Lake can also take away from the rustic appeal of the Adirondacks. The more we industrialize the Adirondacks, there someday will not be a place known as the Adirondacks for our future children to visit and explore.

Definetely NO to one more Wal-Mart anywhere. Small local stores are much more neighborhood friendly for all folks.

No! wal-mart has no place in the adirondack park. If they brought it up here it would put smaller businesses out of business and ruin the character of the adirondacks.

I cannot believe all of you who visit Adirondacks and think you know what’s best for our Town. To those who think it will affect the “beauty” of this “pristine” area - Have you seen the factory that it would replace? I agree small local stores would be better, but guess what - we don’t have those either. It is not like these folks don’t shop at Wal-mart, they just drive 90 miles to get there.

Comment by Michael Ingrassia Commack NY/ Chestertown Ny Aug 8, 2008

No, The park shouldn’t allow such a company. What are you thinking. This has to be the worst idea i have ever heard. Will we sell our souls for a few jobs. Wake up people before you know u it we will have Costco and a Home Depot. Better yet a Taco Bell and a Starbucks. Then the park would resemble any other over developed town in the country.

Comment by Tim Ball Mivhigan Aug 26, 2008

NO NO NO
-When did anyone ask for China to be imported to Tupper Lake?
-wal-mart only wants your money & to leave you with nothing but them to buy from!
-let wal-mart in & its a race to the bottom!

Alright I am so overy sick of hearing about how UGLY a walmart would make this place and how it is going to ruin wildlif and so on…Pople give me a break ook at the OWD “Jarden” what that is not “UGLY” we have already lost that area to the factory..maybe people that live here should think about all the “Teenagers” have kids and not being able to find jobs here. So instead we are paying taxes for them to be on welfare, so yea lets not bring a wal-mart to keep tupper lake in the sorry state its in. You are so greedy those of you that dont want a wal-mart can afford things to spak your mind..gte the lower class on here and I’m sure they will voice a different opinion. I would more than happy to get rid of that old nasty “Jarden” Wal-mart does adhere to environment and would make wal-mart very nice and it would blend well with thee culture here (which is currently crappy) Thanks

If you let Wal-Mart into your town, it will ruin it! All of your local businesses will die out slowly. Look at Antwerp and area small towns losing out to the new Super Wal-Mart in Evans Mills. This is nothing new with them. They don’t care one bit about you. Just the almighty dollar. Just google “The high cost of low prices”. You sheeple need to wake-up!

Comment by Kristen Tupper Lake Feb 11, 2009

If you do your research Walmart has also brought many benefits. That Amish H&H store was failing due to poor management skills, the person who bought it after the arrival of Walmart had a higher appraisle value on the property because of the Walmart. Walmart is bad for some areas and great for others.

Tupper Lake (from a local resident) is failing miserably. I have heard from Sarnac Lake’s recent battle that Walmart would hurt Saranac Lake more than help it and this may be the same story for Lake Placid, but not Tupper Lake. Tupper Lake survives in a different setting than Saranc Lake and Lake Placid. Saranac Lake is “the Heart of the Adirondacks” Lake Placid is the place where the Olympics happened. Tupper has nothing. The museum is a great addition to the town, it has employed many people and brings in some tourism, yes, but it does not bring in enough. Tupper Lakes stores keep shutting down, and the local super markets like Shaheen charge too much for the poor residence, Save-A-Lot is their main source of groceries. The plant closing down has hurt many people as far as jobs go, and now Sunmount is on a hiring freeze. The unemployment rate is going up, the local businesses (like the movie theater) are suffering. The arrival of a Walmart will bring nothing but positives. It will get Tupper Lake more recognised in the area, bringing in tourism, it will help the tri-lakes residence by saving them a 40min to an hour trip to the closest one, and will bring needed job openings to the area.

Small grocery stores sell products at outragous prices…and most items are not fresh. We need decent stores in the mountains. I am tired of driving a hour to get things small stores don’t have.

Comment by Mike Rostiser Adirondacks Jun 13, 2009

What about price chopper in lake placid?
They did a nice job making that store fit the adirondack image. Have you seen walmarts in other areas like the adirondacks? There very nice. some look like a cabin!! This native is sick of going without!!

I’m sorry, for all of you who are devoted to preserving small, family owned operations, have any of you ever actually been to Tupper Lake? Not exactly a thriving community.

Comment by Patrick M. Quinn Milford, NH Dec 17, 2009

NO!!! Wal-Mart will kill-off all local retail. The profits the local businesses keep in the community Wal-Mart will send out of town to their stockholders, who do not care a blank about Tupper Lake. Once Wal-Mart is in no new retail businesses will ever start in Tupper. I am sorry that Tupper has suffered since the mid 60’s but they can not build their way out of it, like lumbering, it will damage Tupper then leave. Tupper’s greatest asset is it’s natural beauty in part from it’s economic misfortune and the limited development that caused.
I have always wished Tupper the very best.
