  • Buy the most fuel efficient car that fits your needs. The additional energy wasted by switching from the average car to an SUV is roughly equivalent to leaving the refrigerator door open for 6 years.
  • Compact fluorescent light bulbs use 4 times less energy and last 10 times as long as traditional light bulbs. Replace your old light bulbs with new fluorescent bulbs.
  • The average car produces over 70 pounds of pollution each year. Bike or walk whenever possible.
  • Set your thermostat higher in the summer and lower in the winter. Even changing the thermostat by a few degrees at night can reduce pollution and save money in heating bills.
  • Turn out lights whenever you leave a room.
  • Not all appliances are created equal. Do your appliances use significantly less energy than mandated by federal standards? Look for the Energy Star label when purchasing new appliances.
  • Keep your house weather-tight. Inspect windows and doors for drafts, and check your attic insulation to be sure it is adequate for your climate.
  • The clothes dryer and water heater use inordinate amounts of energy. Consider switching these appliances to natural gas, where possible. Install a low flow showerhead, and dry clothes on a clothesline when weather permits.
  • Eat locally grown food, or grow your own. You will save the gasoline needed to transport the food, and enjoy more nutritious food.
