Adirondack Museum - Lake Placid

Firmly Rooted, Branching Out

In our 50th year, the Adirondack Museum is undertaking an ambitious and exciting project. Plans are underway to develop a new branch museum in Lake Placid, New York. The new facility will allow us to reach out to residents of the Tri-Lakes area and welcome the many visitors who vacation in Lake Placid each year.

The Adirondack Museum - Lake Placid will include more than 8,000 square feet of space for state-of-the-art permanent and changing exhibits, education programs, special events, the museum store, and office space. Artifacts, historic photographs, and fine art from our extensive collections will tell the stories of the Adirondacks at the year-round facility.

The distinguished architectural firm of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, LLP (SOM) has been selected to guide all aspects of the branch museum's design and architecture. Founded in Chicago in 1936, SOM has undertaken more than 10,000 architecture, engineering, interior design, urban design, and planning projects in more than 50 countries. Throughout its illustrious history, SOM has been recognized with more than 800 awards for quality and innovation, 125 of which have been received in the past ten years.

The museum is undertaking a capital campaign to raise funds for the project. Former Governor George E. Pataki announced a grant to the museum in the amount of $1 million from the State of New York in December 2006. That award has been instrumental in moving the project forward.
